Our History

2014 NGFN Logo1996 – First discussions of Franciscan Vocation Ministers at the National Religious Vocation Conference (NRVC) Convocation for the possibility of gathering to dream, network, and support one another as Franciscan women engaged in the very challenging ministries of vocation and formation.

1997 – Next Generation of Franciscan Women with 35 participants gathered at Kings College in Wilkes-Barre, PA

1998 to 2006 (2003 was skipped) – Next Generation of Franciscans gathered in different locations where the annual Franciscan Federation meetings were held. Note: It appears that at some point, Leadership and Associate Ministers had been invited to the work groups.

2007 to 2009 – Gatherings were held at Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville, IL. In 2008, the name was changed to “Next Generation of Franciscan Mentors” because of the long standing misconception that the annual gatherings were for new members. The new name clarifies that participants are the ministers serving prospective and newer members.

2010 – The gathering was moved to the Portiuncula Center for Prayer (The PORT) in Frankfort, IL.

2011 – present – Conference continues at the Portiuncula Center for Prayer

2015 – Attendee’s elected to widen the scope of the conferences to include those who mentor Franciscan vowed religious, Secular Franciscans, Associates/affiliates/cojourners, High school or university students, Volunteers in Franciscan-based service programs and those with a Franciscan heart.
